Artificial Sweeteners Negatively Regulate Pathogenic Characteristics of Two Model Gut Bacteria, E. coli and E. faecalis

Artificial sweeteners (AS) are synthetic sugar substitutes that commonly consumed in the diet. Recent studies have indicated considerable health risks which links consumption of AS with metabolic derangements and gut microbiota perturbations. Despite these studies, there is still limited data on how impacts commensal to cause pathogenicity. The present study sought investigate role bacterial pathogenicity epithelium-microbiota interactions, using models (Escherichia coli NCTC10418 Enterococcus faecalis ATCC19433) intestinal epithelium (Caco-2 cells). Model bacteria were exposed different concentrations saccharin, sucralose, aspartame, their changes interactions Caco-2 cells measured vitro studies. Findings show differentially increase ability form a biofilm. Co-culture human epithelial shows an model adhere to, invade kill host epithelium. pan-sweet taste inhibitor, zinc sulphate, effectively blocked negative impacts. Since diet continues increase, understanding this food additive affects damaging effects can be ameliorated vital.
